Malcolm Wilsom, founder and current manager of M-Sport, is the alma mater of this team. The World Rally Championship owes a lot to this person and to the whole that makes up the English structure. 2021 is being a very difficult year for everyone, and they are not the exception.
In a statement to DirtFish, the Englishman was satisfied to be at the start of the Monte-Carlo Rally, where Teemu Suninen showed that the Fiesta WRC was up to the task. They are fully aware that they do not have a winning lineup, but the future goals are very different.
Here’s how Wilson puts it: “Right now we have a different priority. Everything I’m doing is aiming to keep the company running, get through this nightmare period of COVID-19 and Brexit and look to the future. And, for us, the future means the car of 2022″.
Wilson has praised the work of his drivers, also mentioning Adrien Fourmaux. “We have a long history, of which I am very proud, of developing young drivers” he admits. Hirvonen, Latvala, Duval … They are a clear example of this.
Objective 2022
The Englishman does not hide it: “Don’t you think I would love to have Sébastien, Ott and Elfyn in the team and drive the car like we did in 2017? Believe me, if I could I would and if I did I would not be wrong, the result would be the same as in 2017. We would win it all”.
In addition, he admits in some very interesting words: “The goal for me personally is to get to 2022 as we did in 2017, with the fastest car and driver. I want to come back to the front next year and if that means sacrificing this season to do that, then that’s what we’ll do“.
The economics of this thing’s pretty simple: we’ve already made 100 people redundant here and folk out there are asking why we’re not employing a driver for x millions of pounds per year? It’s simple, it’s because by not doing that we can keep the other 100-plus staff from being made redundant as well”.
“To be completely honest, I’m not interested in what the outside world says about us right now. If any of those people had the slightest idea what Millener and everyone here went through just to get us to Monte Carlo, maybe they’d think a little in what they are writing”
